The structure of our day is so important now more than ever. Setting up routines, and putting structures in place for your children to follow will help them grow, learn, and prosper.
We have to teach our children that education is so very important. They need to learn that LEARNING happens every day whether you are in school or not. This is the only way to develop life-long learners!
During REMOTE LEARNING, it is extremely important to set up routines and schedules that work for everyone in the household. If children know that between 9 am and 11 am and then between 1 pm and 3 pm they need to do their school work, then every day at those times they would need to do their work. If it changes daily, or if there is another schedule needed, then put up a calendar or schedule for them to look at each day. You can use a big calendar, corkboard, or a whiteboard so they can view the schedule and know what is expected of them on a daily basis. They should be able to be independent, not wait for you to tell them what to do, and know their schedule for each day.
It is also important that you check their work to make sure they are actually doing their best and handing in all of their assignments, especially in Elementary School. Children learn that they can lie, not do work, and hide things from their parents if their parents let them get away with it. Not checking up on them, is helping them to know they can do all of that because no one will ever find out. Teach them to be responsible. If they do not do their work, make sure they do it or give them a consequence. If they do not put the effort in their work, have them go back and put more effort into an assignment, or else there is a consequence. Consequences need to happen to teach them what to do and what not to do. Following through with those consequences is also key to helping children learn.
Parenting is not easy! We have to do the best we can do during these times. Parenting does, however, require that EXTRA time or EXTRA effort to make sure our kids are doing what they are supposed to be doing. Any other questions or comments, please email me or write a comment. 🙂
